Happy New Year's Eve everyone. Don't be stupid tonight, if you're drinking, don't drive. It's amateur hour and a lot of idiots are going to be out and about.

Second, Florida re-signed center Nick Bjugstad to a 6 year, $4.1mm extension. I have concerns over the impact it will have on Couturier & Brayden Schenn moving forward.

Schenn has 29 G and 64 Pts over the this season and last. Couturier has 22 G and 59 Pts over the same span. Bjugstad has 29 G and 59 Pts.

I can't see how both Schenn & Couturier sign for less than $4mm each after the Bjugstad deal.

Calgary Hitmen beat some team 9-2 last night... and somehow neither Fazleev or Sanheim got a single point the entire game, not only that but combined they were minus 1 ... how that happens is absolutely amazing.

They've both gone on a bit of drought, Radel hasn't had a single point in his last 5 games and Sanheim in his last 4.

In other words, trade them immediately.

I think someone yesterday said it is and we don't need to worry because he talks in circles and everything works out.

That was expected even before the Bjugstad signing. In 16/17, 4M is chump change.

I see your point...

Since it was expected he shouldn't even have brought it up.

Understood.

The 6 years is more of my concern. I feel only the elite players should get contracts over 4 years in length. I would be more comfortable giving Couturier 6 years because he is not relied on to score as much and he is a hell of a defensive player. I would not be willing to give Schenn 6 years.

It had nothing to do with bringing it up or not. You may not have gotten my point, since my point is that the Bjugstad signing doesn't change much, in terms of the AAV that both Couturier and Schenn were looking at in the future. I don't see it as future worry, or that signing having an impact, or changing what was already going to happen anyway.

Understandable. In a deal like that Florida is hedging their bets and overpaying upfront in the hopes that the player further develops and explodes and becomes cheap down the line. The Flyers did the same thing with Wayne Simmonds. It's a gamble if the player doesn't develop as they expect. The downside to only offering 4 years, is if the player does explode in terms of development, he's looking at a bigger payday for those last 2 years.

As an example, if the Flyers had signed Voracek to a 6 year deal at 4.25 in 11/12 instead of a 4 year deal, look at the bargain they'd be getting if he continues to play at his current level.

It's a little concerning but I would be fine with it. These 2 guys are getting better IMO. They are on a struggling team, with struggling or rookie linemates and a knucklehead coach. Not really a great situation. Yet they will both likely score 20-25 goals and 50-60 pts.

All signings have some impact. Why are average defensmen(ie MacDonald) now getting the deals they are? Because when Calgary signed Wiedman to his, it set a bar that allowed average defensman to make make a case for being signed to the same numbers or higher.

The raise into the 4M or above range was inevitable in their next deals. Schenn needs to get out of his slump.

I like how Laughton has played but he is not creating anything for Schenn and Simmonds. To me thats the problem. Also the PP has struggled of late. Schenn is on an island right now.

The Bjugstad signing doesn't change what Schenn or Couturier were going to get in their next deals. That was already the market range for players of their caliber, especially with where they were in terms of years of service.
And that's comparing UFA's to RFA's. That's a whole different ballgame.

Absolutely it is. That line needs a playmaker badly. All 3 players are grinders who work the corners and go to the net. They play well in terms of forechecking and puck pressure. Laughton is a pretty strong player away from the puck. He dosn't have the ability with the puck yet to distribute to Schenn and Simmonds.

I think Laughton has shown skill, just does not yet have the vision and awareness to make the plays that are right in front of him....He's a rookie.... I expected it....

I agree with everything you typed. I just feel that resigning your own guys for longer than 4 years is foolish. Specifically the younger players. Make them earn it and then pay them if they do and you want to keep them. I am fine with that. You can always flip quality players for assets if you do not feel they are worth what they will get as an FA.

Free agents are a different story because sometimes you have to overpay in terms of dollars and length to land a player in an open bid situation.

I think he's a good player now, who will get even better. I don't know that he's going to become a play maker or puck carrier though in the future. I think he does have some offensive upside though.
